Description

A Beautiful Japanese Edo Period Some - tsuke (blue and white) Arita porcelain dish modelled in the form of an open lotus leaf with detailed veining and realistic turned leaf edges.

Finely decorated in strong under glaze blue and elegantly depicting a Humming bird in flight amongst a profusion of flora, fauna and reeds next to a meandering river. The reverse of the dish continues the theme and features a further Humming bird in flight toward reeds and rushes, again in strong under glaze blue with an un glazed foot rim in the form of a curled stem.

Made during the early to middle part of the 19th century (notice the uneven un glazed foot rim), this delightful dish, probably one of a set of five, was intended for serving delicacies.
