A Sumida Gawa brush pot dating from the Meiji Period and signed by the artist Ryosai with an impressed mark to the base. Modelled with elephant trunk handles and enjoying the wonderful multi coloured drip glazes cascading down and into the brush pot, as associated with quality Sumida pieces.The brush pot depicts a Scholar standing next to a flaming fire on a rocky outcrop.

A virtually identical piece (they are all individually hand made) is shown on page 134 of the reference book "Sumida....according to us" by Karp & Pond under reference 380 with a price guide of $225 - 275.

This item is in excellent condition apart from one minor old loss in the rim as shown photograph 4.
