A most unusual, unique individually hand thrown and decorated Satsuma crackle glaze Kaga ware elegant tapering bowl featuring all round "1000 Scholars" decoration with stunning gilding featuring many scholars assembled in discussions over scrolls and books.

This rare example offers many distinct features such as turned lower exterior half of bowl with part ringed gold highlights culminating in a fine narrow base rim.

The upper exterior decorated with many scholars in various stages of discussion all dressed in highly coloured assorted kimonos with gold highlights, some raised enamelling and others flat to create a three dimensional feel and featuring strong coloured hues of blue, green, yellow and purple. All on a gold base which continues to feature round the rim.

The interior of the bowl is also interestingly decorated with the continuation of the highly coloured scholastic theme but this time in a near circular cartouche with the remainder of the interior finished with symmetric raised gold dots.

The condition of this unique Meiji Period bowl is excellent with no damage, loss or restoration and only the very slightest rubbing as is expected of an item of this age.
