Description

A wonderful and large shaped Meiji Period Sumida Gawa vase hand made and decorated by Koko,which has also been used as a lamp base. 

Enjoying the usual spectacular drip glazes cascading from the rim,into and down the sides of the the vase in intermingled shades  of brown,black and various hues of light blue, all on a black ground and featuring bold very well modelled figures to the body of a Mother with her three children and maid servent playing and climbing on rocky ground.

A virtually identical vase is featured on page 50 and numbered 104 in the book of reference entitled " Sumida ... according to us" by Herbert Karp and Gardner Pond.

Furthermore a letter from the Senior Curator of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art dated the 1st May 1985 confirms provenance.

This large example is in excellent condition.
