Description
.
A large and wonderful early Fukagawa twin ornate handled shaped vase clearly bearing the signature/mark of Nichi Hi Yama Fukagawa tsukuru, late 19th century.

This mark was used by Koransha before the company divided and Fukagawa Seiji was established in 1894. The three characters on the right hand side read Nichi, Hi, Yama from top to bottom. Nichi refers to Nippon (Japan). Hi refers to Hizen (Present day Saga Prefecture). Yama refers to Arita Sarayama (the location of the kiln). The characters on the left read Fukagawa tsukuru which means "made by Fukagawa".

In superb and undamaged condition this stunning, large vase has been finely hand decorated by the artist and features two large mirrored reserves, both displaying a Samurai Warrior in full battle dress and a Bijin ga (Beautiful woman) at his feet in a lakeside setting under Mount Fuji. Two further smaller reserves above extend the lakeside view.

The remainder of the vase displays all over garden scenes (including the inner and outer rim) of fine flora,  fauna and kiku head decoration of a multitude of raised coloured enamels also featuring the Ho-Ho Imperial bird of Paradise.

A commanding, rare and very collectable item
in really good condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or paint flakes.
