Description

A stunning and rare large Imari bowl dating from the late Edo Period - c1860.

With an unusual wavy rim topping the six sides and featuring three large circular
internal panels displaying Kirin ( the Japanese Unicorn) amongst flora and fauna.

The Japanese unicorn, is an important part of oriental culture.

The kirin and the k’i – lin, normally shy creatures, taking large detours to avoid confrontation, have a similar gazelle-like appearance and are solitary animals who walk with measured tread, though some say the k’i-lin skips. The male is called the k’i, while the female is the lin. Although it had different forms. its eyes were always intent and piercing".

The three other internal smaller panels feature smaller beasts and butterflies amongst flora and match three of the outer panels occupying three of the six outer sides.

Stylised geometric patterns and kiku heads complete the inner overall decoration whilst three further full panels featuring bamboo leaves and flora in a raised containers complete the stunning overall decoration to the outer sides of this rare bowl.

This most unusual item is in excellent condition for its age with some rubbing of the gold and two minor rim flake restorations (see photos) but is a must for any serious collector.
