Skilled engraving of the original painting "Floreal", copper printed by printers Salmon & Ardail in Paris. Printed on thick art paper.

This is an important original print by Parisian printers A Salmon & Ardail of the time, c.1886, of one of the major works of painter Louis Josepth Raphael Collin, painted in 1886. It depicts a nymph lying in a woodland glade on a couch of turf and wild flowers. Floreal was the Month of Flowers - created for April 20th to May 19th in the French Republican rejig of the almanac. Rips to the edges but not where they would show if the print were to be framed. Age/damp spotting as shown in the photographs.

Life:

Collin studied at Saint-Louis, and then with Jules Bastien-Lepage in Verdun. This may have influenced his decision to become a painter. Moving to Paris, he entered the studio of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, followed by the atelier of Alexandre Cabanel, where his fellow pupils included Lepage, Fernand-Anne-Piestre Cormon, Aimé Nicolas Morot and Benjamin Constant. He made his début in the Salon in 1875 with Sommeil (Musée de Rouen), for which he won a second class medal. His main works include Idylle (1875; Musée d'Arras); Daphnis et Chloé (1877; Musée d'Alençon); Floréal (1886; Musée du Luxembourg); and the decorative panel Fin d'été (Sorbonne). He won the Grand prix at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and at the Exposition Universelle in Anvers in 1894. He was appointed Officier de la Légion d'honneur in 1899 and was elected a member of the l'Institut in 1909. Harmony in Green and Rose: The Music Room may have been bought by Collin in 1894.

Alfred Salmon - Copper-plate printer. Born in 1825, trained by Chardon aîné at Rue Hautefeuille. Set up his printing business when took over Rémond's business in 1863. In 1890-1894 in partnership with Adolphe Ardail (1835-1911), trading as Salmon & Ardail. In 1894 the premises at 187 Rue St Jacques were taken over by Salmon's son-in-law, and in 1895 by his grandson Alfred Louis Porcabeuf (b.1867)
